How to Use a Cocktail Shaker: Tips for the Perfect Cocktail

To get the most out of your mixed drinks, it’s important to know exactly how to use a cocktail shaker. While this may seem self explanatory, there’s a bit more to it than the name indicates. It’s not as simple as shaking and pouring. Different cocktails require different techniques to balance flavour, texture and temperature for consistently great results. In this helpful blog post, we explain what a cocktail shaker is, how to use one properly and the different types of cocktail shakers so you can mix drinks with confidence.

What is a Cocktail Shaker?

A cocktail shaker is barware, often made of stainless steel, that is used to mix ingredients by shaking them with ice. The design typically features a tightly sealed container and a top lid to prevent spills. Some cocktail shakers are equipped with strainers, while others require a separate strainer to remove ice and other ingredients when pouring the finished drink.

A cocktail shaker has two key functions: to chill drinks quickly while adding controlled dilution and to blend flavours evenly. Shaking also helps create texture, which is especially important in cocktails that require a smoother finish.

Chabrias has a range of cocktail shakers that make it easier to achieve balanced, bar-quality drinks at home. Regardless of your cocktail preference, our vast selection of barware can assist you in making your favourite drink.

Types of Cocktail Shakers

Boston Shaker

A Boston shaker is a two-piece cocktail shaker that is made of stainless steel and features a smaller mixing glass or a second metal tin. The two parts fit together to create a tight seal, allowing drinks to be shaken vigorously. It’s a popular choice with professional bartenders thanks to its speed, versatility and ability to chill cocktails quickly.

Cobbler Shaker

A cobbler shaker is a three-piece cocktail shaker made up of a metal tin, a built-in strainer and a small cap that seals the top. It’s easy to use and requires no extra tools, making it ideal for beginners. The built-in strainer allows for a quick, mess-free pour, excellent for those who value convenience.

French Shaker

A French shaker is a sleek two-piece shaker made entirely from stainless steel. It’s similar to a Boston shaker but without the mixing glass. It essentially combines a large tin with a smaller metal lid, ideal for those who prioritise a sophisticated design along with good temperature control.

How Do You Use Cocktail Shakers?

Add your Ingredients and Ice

Start by gathering your ingredients and adding them to the smaller shaker tin. Using a jigger helps ensure precise measurements and balanced flavour. Once the liquids are in, fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice. You can also add the ice first and pour the ingredients over the top before sealing.

Securely Seal the Shaker

Before shaking, make sure the shaker is properly sealed to avoid spills. Place the larger tin over the smaller one and give it a firm tap to create a tight seal. This simple step prevents leaks and keeps everything contained while you mix.

Shake Until Perfectly Chilled

With the shaker secure, hold it firmly with both hands and shake vigorously. A strong, controlled shake chills the drink quickly, blends the ingredients evenly and creates the right level of dilution. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold to the touch.

Carefully Open the Shaker

Now that you’ve finished shaking, carefully open the shaker to avoid spills. This may require a little extra elbow grease, so make sure you have a solid grip before opening it.

Strain the Drink into a Glass

This step will vary depending on the type of shaker you’re using. A cobbler shaker has a built in strainer, making it quick and easy to pour your drink straight into the glass. If you’re using a Boston shaker, you’ll need a separate strainer. Place it securely over the shaker tin, hold it in position with your fingers and carefully pour to keep the ice from entering the glass.

Which Cocktails Need Shaking?

Not all cocktails need to be vigorously shaken. The ingredients within a cocktail determine the best mixing method. Drinks that contain fruit juice, cream, egg white, syrups or liqueurs should be shaken. The shaking process is part of what improves the texture and integration of these cocktails. Spirit-only cocktails, on the other hand, should be stirred to maintain clarity and achieve a smooth finish.
